    Fire rating 5.3 explained simply

    The fire rating describes a material’s fire and smoke behaviour. It consists of a flammability grade and a smoke grade.

    Rating 5.3 stands for flame-retardant materials with low smoke formation. According to the VKF assignment, it corresponds to reaction-to-fire group RF2 with a low contribution to fire.

    What do the numbers 5 and 3 mean?

    The two numbers assess different properties of the material.

    5

    5 = flame-retardant

    The first number indicates the flammability grade. Within the system shown, flammability increases from class 6 to class 3.

    3

    3 = low smoke formation

    The second number indicates the smoke grade. Class 3 represents low smoke formation, while class 1 represents heavy smoke formation.

    RF2

    Assigned to RF2

    The VKF assigns fire rating 5.3 to reaction-to-fire group RF2. RF2 means a low contribution to fire.

    Requirements for electrical installations

    Fire rating scale for corrugated conduits with a marker at 5.3
    The scale shows where fire rating 5.3 sits within the possible classifications.

    For fire-protection-relevant electrical installations, materials must be selected to suit the installation location and application. The applicable requirements are particularly important where cables are routed on or inside combustible building components.

    The existing plica page refers to NIN 7.12.5.2.1.2. The current standard, valid product evidence and project-specific requirements are decisive for the actual planning.

    NIN 7.12.5.2.1.2 for PV DC main cables

    Photovoltaic DC main cables must be installed as fixed wiring. The insulation materials used must meet increased insulation requirements, for example by using halogen-free materials. PVC insulation is not suitable for this purpose.

    Where the possible short-circuit current does not exceed, or only slightly exceeds, the operating current, the NIN rule reproduced on the existing page does not require additional short-circuit protection measures.

    Important for combustible building components

    Where these cables run over combustible building components or are installed inside them, they must be routed in flame-retardant conduits or trunking classified RF2 or BKZ 5.2, or in non-combustible solutions classified RF1 or BKZ 6q or BKZ 6. Cables with a metallic sheath or concentric conductor may also be used. PVC insulation is unsuitable.

    The current NIN edition, valid product evidence and project-specific requirements remain decisive for planning.

    Important questions about fire ratings

    How is a fire rating structured?

    Flammability grade and smoke grade

    The fire rating is shown as a combination of two numbers. The first describes flammability and the second describes smoke formation.

    What does fire rating 5.3 mean?

    Flame-retardant with low smoke formation

    The value 5 indicates the flame-retardant flammability grade. The value 3 indicates low smoke formation.

    What does RF2 mean?

    Low contribution to fire

    RF stands for reaction au feu. The VKF assigns fire rating 5.3 to group RF2 with a low contribution to fire.

    How can suitable plica products be identified?

    Marking directly on the product

    Products tested accordingly carry the plica 5.3 label. The technical product data and valid evidence must also be checked before use.
